Lifeguarding Class

Triton College will offer an entry-level lifeguarding course for individuals ages 15 and up. This course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Students will also learn how to provide aid for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until an EMS responder arrives.

Participants must meet several physical requirements, including swimming 150 yards non-stop; treading water for two minutes using only their legs; completing a timed event within one minute, 40 seconds, which includes starting in the water and swimming 20 yards; performing a surface dive to a depth of 10 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, returning to the surface and swimming 20 yards on their back while holding he object, and exiting the water without using steps or a ladder. The course will be taught in Triton’s Olympic-size swimming pool.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive an American Red Cross Certificate for Lifeguarding, valid for two years.
